The Children of Chernobyl, United States Charitable Fund is a non-profit organization established in 1992 by the
Belarusian Charitable Fund in the Republic of Belarus.
They are a non-government agency consisting of over 5000 volunteers dedicated to help save the children of their
devastated country by providing them with a respite from ongoing exposure to radiation. Because of the unfortunate state of economy in Belarus, and the lack of support of their government, they have established organizations to host these children in more than 20 countries around the world and rely on them to raise funds to transport the children.
We are one of these organizations.
We bring healthy children from Belarus who are between the ages of 8 and 12 to America for a 6 to 8 week respite. By removing them from the deadly contamination, their immune systems begin to function normally and their bodies are more able to fight off the effects of the radiation. We place these children with host families, matching age and gender of Belarusian children with host American children as closely as possible. The children are exposed to our good water, healthy food, fresh air, sunshine, exersize and of course love. They are started on multi-vitamins to further their recovery and provided with clothing for the summer. The children also receive medical check-ups, dental care anda treatment, eye care, all donated by local doctors and hospitals. These children come only with the clothes on their backs. They speak no English and are completely unfamiliar with our way of life. We are among those citizens of the world who are conscious of the real threat that the Chernobyl nuclear disaster presents to the public health of the world. We are deeply concerned about the welfare of the children and their families and the impending effects of Chernobyl on the future generations. Will the children of Belarus survive this generation, predictions are, they will not. |
